The Dutch-Bosnian composer and concert artist Nihad Hrustanbegovi\u0107 is regarded worldwide as a revolutionary musician and artist in the world of the classical contemporary accordion. He is acclaimed for his contribution to the emancipation of the instrument in the Netherlands and globally, as a result of which it is increasingly becoming a fully-fledged concert instrument in the realm of music albums and film scores, as well as on well-known stages, ensuring that the classical accordion no longer belongs only to niche culture or is primarily associated with folk music. He has performed at venues including the Royal Theatre Carr\u00e9, Notre-Dame Cathedral-du-Puy (France), Sacred Heart Cathedral (Sarajevo), and Paradiso (Amsterdam), as well as in almost all Dutch theaters together with Flairck and Corpus. In 2010, Nihad Hrustanbegovic became the first classical contemporary accordionist to give a solo concert recital at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and is also the first accordionist in the world to record a solo interpretation of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, strictly based on the original Urtext score. Unlike other arrangements that simplify parts, his version features the solo and orchestral parts simultaneously, without compromising the integrity of the original composition. Symphonic accordion. Nihad Hrustanbegovi\u0107 has had a significant impact on Dutch music culture through the emancipation of the accordion as a fully-fledged concert instrument in the late 1990s and the decades that followed, thereby inspiring other young generations of accordionists in the Netherlands and worldwide. His composition “Wereld promenade” (part of the Stork Suite) became nationally known as the soundtrack to the Heineken Extra Cold TV commercial in 2007 and 2008. Through the use of his composition in the Heineken campaign, millions of Dutch people were exposed to classical contemporary accordion sounds via all public and commercial channels. Partly due to this success, his performance on the program De Wereld Draait Door led to Nihad being voted the best artist of the 2006\/2007 season by the public via a DWDD internet poll. Nihad Hrustanbegovi\u0107’s debut album “The Best of Concert Accordion” (2007) was very positively received in the Netherlands and elsewhere in Europe by both critics and the general public. The album featuring works by Bach, Gubaidulina, Ole Schmidt, Edvard Grieg, Scarlatti, Semionov, Paganini, and Hrustanbegovic marked his breakthrough and established the concert accordion as a serious solo instrument in the Netherlands. He performed for Her Majesty Queen Beatrix in 1998 during the 50th Anniversary of the Foundation for Refugee Students UAF, among others, and in the Hall of Knights in 2005 and 2016 during the Van Heuven Goedhart lecture. Additionally, he collaborated with iconic artists and orchestras such as Grace Jones, Al Di Meola, the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Flairck, and Corpus. He devoted considerable time to large and small art compositions and social projects. For example, he wrote the piece “A’dam & Eve \u2013 City of Forbidden Fruit” in honor of Amsterdam’s 750th anniversary and performed at the Amstelkerk in late October 2025. He also worked on the project Eleven Voices of Srebrenica, which was featured in podcasts by VPRO and NPO Radio as part of his 10th solo album Mediterraneo. <\/p>\n<\/div>

After coming to the Netherlands from Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1994 due to war, music and art finally regained a central place in his new life. Nihad Hrustanbegovi\u0107’s strong integration into Dutch society is largely due to his remarkable talent, his academic dedication, and his active involvement in Dutch culture and history, as well as, naturally, his interest in European culture and history. But that has always been the case, because Nihad Hrustanbegovic is born in the heart of Europe. Just six months after arriving in the Netherlands as a war refugee from Bosnia and Herzegovina, he began his studies, and seven years later, Nihad graduated cum laude from the Artez and Messiaen Academies in Arnhem. This academic achievement became a solid foundation for his career in his new homeland. He actively contributes to and is socially involved in Dutch commemorations and celebrations. Nihad Hrustanbegovic speaks excellent Dutch, which allowed him to fully integrate into the Dutch music and cultural world. A large part of his oeuvre consists of his own compositions, which he wrote in the Netherlands. Thus, he is a Dutch composer with a Bosnian background. During his studies at the Conservatory in Arnhem, he was taught by Miny Dekkers and Gerie Daanen, and via Erasmus, by Friedrich Lips, James Crabb, and Margit Kern. Nihad Hrustanbegovic is often mentioned in the same breath as pop music because, as a classically trained accordionist, he constantly pushes the boundaries of his instrument through crossover projects and has given more than 1,000 concerts in Europe to date, both solo and with other musicians and artists from the classical, modern, pop, jazz, crossover, and film world.<\/p>\n<\/div>
